All About Grass-fed

  • Grass contains nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fatty acids that are good for humans.
  • We benefit from these when we consume dairy products from grass-fed animals.
  • Dairy animals evolved to eat mostly grass. A diet of high-starch grains causes digestive stress and illness.

Cows are sensitive foodies too!

Better nutritional profile and more health benefits

Better fat content and texture

Organic isn't the same as grass-fed

Non-organic feed can contain hormones, antibiotics and vegetable oil by-products

Salad please. Pasteur-based farming is healthier for livestock, the environment and us.

Ma Nourriture

Most commercially-driven livestock "producers" raise animals on cost-effective grains, such as corn and soy, with feeding schedules that fit into a production line approach. This causes distress to the animals, which does not make for healthy produce. Just like eating cornflakes all day isn't a good idea for us, 100% grain fed animals are unhealthy and the produce we get from them is poor quality, lacking the healthful nutrients of those raised in their natural habitat.

I am against practices that rob us of the wonders of nature. For me, living in as natural a way as possible is as important for us as it is for animals and for the planet. When we embark on a journey to take better care of ourselves, we start to see not a linear food chain, but a circle of nourishment in which all of us - consumer, farmer and farmed - have a valuable role to play. I see mine as supporting real farming, where respect and love for the animals and the environment is the reason the farmers farm, and not just a bow to sustainability for the purposes of sustained profitability.

Love Respect Understand

Grass-fed animals are not mass produced. They are farmed in a way that respects natural ecosystems and wildlife habitat, reduces reliance on chemicals, improves soil quality and reduces harmful greenhouse gases. Farmers, as opposed to producers, are also more likely to use rainwater and recycled water irrigation systems, further reducing the environmental impact of raising livestock.

These days, most people, from eco-warriors to everyday joe's like me who realise it's up to us to make better environmental choices, know about The Great Cow Fart problem. Dairy farming specifically, contributes more to global warming  than than aviation, shipping and road vehicles combined!

While grass feeding causes less strain on an animals' digestion with less emissions, it doesn't solve the problem in itself. But supporting pasteur-based farming means supporting the changes that are needed in the dairy farming industry and, over time, shifting the balance.
