Alpro Soya Professional

Through the Covid-19 pandemic Alpro provided independent coffee shops with their range free of charge, to help keep them afloat. Stories like these open our hearts, minds and tastes. That's how I finally met this guy. Bestie had been trying to introduce me for some time, but soya just seemed so boring.

With it's long history as the only substitute for people with dairy allergies, soya quite widely available, if not at restaurants then at nearby supermarkets. The neutral taste doesn't offend the coffee, but always offended me.

It's not really creamy. It's bland and watery and there's almost always sugar added (2.5g more than milk), which tells you something about the actual taste of soya! And then there's the possiblity of mild hormonal effects (from phytoestrogens that mimic oestrogen) so it's not advised for pregnant women. Clearly I'm not a fan, but it's bestie's salvation. While she's become pro-black coffee lately, when she's in the mood for milky and there's no Oatly, soya will do. So soya stays, if only as her backup guy.

Alpro sources their soya responsibly and have various other versions, such as unsweetened, organic, etc.

Sustainability

Soya is a sustainable crop only when it is responsibly farmed. The massive uptick in demand due to global dietary trends has devastated South American rainforests. Read more about popular milk alternatives
